General practice is a critical part of the wider NHS and together, we care for the most vulnerable members of our community. Covid-19 infection rates are extremely high and continuing to rise in Surrey Heath. Our numbers of staff in general practice are also reduced by the infection rate, and so to keep our patients and staff safe we need to make changes to the way we provide services locally. This will ensure that those most at risk from the impact of Covid and those with the greatest health needs are prioritised at this time including ensuring the Covid-19 vaccination is rolled out as quickly as possible to priority groups.
Minor illness and conditions that can be dealt with by community pharmacies will not be seen in general practice. Please follow our “Know Where to Go When Feeling Unwell” guidance and contact your local pharmacy in the first instance. If you need advice over and above what your pharmacy can provide, use NHS 111 online NHS 111 online or call NHS111 if you do not have access to the internet.
General practice remains OPEN if you need us for an urgent and on-going health need:
Practices have been asked to prioritise the needs of those people we know are at increased risk from Covid-19, including people with long term conditions, frailty, learning disabilities and severe mental illness.
Serious, ongoing and urgent conditions will be prioritised including routine care for those at higher risk
You may notice that you have less contact with your GP than previously if your condition is stable at the moment.
Suspected cancer will be prioritised
Covid-19 infections will be prioritised
Many other services will also continue, but please consider how urgent your request is and whether this could wait.
Our staff have the right to be treated with dignity and respect at all times, so if you need to contact the practice please remember that any abuse of our staff will not be tolerated.

As you might have heard on the news, we are in the process of staffing COVID 19 vaccination clinics so our workforce is being diverted to this essential service. We are aware that it is frustrating that we cannot offer business as usual however the NHS is experiencing its greatest challenge since it was set up and everyone must be prepared to do their bit including the general public.

In addition to general practice provision, some of our doctors are staffing Heatherwood hospital looking after unwell COVID patients that have been stepped down from Frimley Hospital. One of our GP's is working tirelessly in A.E helping with the surge in unwell patients. Some of the nurses and doctors are also working for various other medical departments like out of hours care, minor injuries unit and also providing remote video general practice appointments. We have just managed to complete the largest ever influenza vaccination program last year.

We deal with thousands of prescription requests daily. We have to action hundreds of blood results that come through daily. We action letters from hospital consultants and have to deal with numerous email queries daily. We are dealing with COVID outbreak sadly in a few of our nursing home residents. We are undertaking monitoring of COVID patients who have been discharged home and continue to remain fragile.

We are also very much human and not robots! Our staff have been unwell with COVID and we are constantly battling staff shortages.

So our plea to the frustrated patients out there is this. Stop and pause before you direct your frustration to a human working in healthcare who is likely to be both trying their very best and struggling to keep their head above water. Channel your frustration for good. If you want change, write to your MP, start a petition or provide your practice with constructive feedback through appropriate channels.

We also make a plea to the section of the media that persistently trolls general practice, spreading unfounded rumours and fuelling discontent. Please, pause and consider the doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, phlebotomists, receptionists, admin staff, managers and cleaners, who are all just humans. Humans who will be there helping you and your family when you next need us.

COVID vaccinations

If you are calling with a COVID vaccination query please dial 01276 707100 where you will be connected to Surrey Heath borough council who are working with the practice to answer questions and help book your vaccine following an invitation.  They are open Monday to Thursday 8.30 – 5.00 and Friday 8.30 – 4.30pm.
